"I am 46 years old, and I have had a big sore toe since I was around 35 years old. Every now and then it would seem to flare up and get even worse. I found out that it was gout a few years ago when I finally brought it up to my doctor. It was so sore I couldn't do anything, I tried pain pills and even ice didn't help. My doctor finally told me that the pain pills were stressing my liver out, that in fact that the gout was being caused by a weakening liver condition. Born and raised as an Italian American, rich foods and good wines are a huge part of my lifestyle. In my early 40's, I woke up one morning with a pain in my right big toe. It was swollen, red and purple, and felt like I had broken my foot in my sleep. I couldn't walk and the heat and pain were terrible. I hate to admit it but I was reduced to tears.
